SNOWBOARD SKILL DESCRIPTION

 

STANCE & BALANCE

  • relaxed athletic stance;
  • balanced body position;
  • mobility in all joints;
  • hands tip to tail.

 

PIVOT & STEERING

  • shoulders turn in direction of travel;
  • body should follow (hips, knees, feet);
  • turn shape is a formed “C” (no open turns).

 

 

SKILL DESCRIPTION

POOR: Skill consistently demonstrated improperly and that the desired result is not achieved except on the easiest of terrain

FAIR: Skill is demonstrated properly but only occasionally

GOOD: Skill is demonstrated consistently but the rider may have occasional difficulty on more difficult terrain or conditions

EXCELLENT: Skill is demonstrated consistently on all terrains and under all conditions.

N/A: Other skills not developed sufficiently for this skill to be a factor

 

EDGE CONTROL

  • adjusts edge angle for appropriate pitch and snow conditions;
  • creates edge by angulation and inclination (flexing hips, knees and ankles)

PRESSURE CONTROL

  • flex and extend to keep mass on a stable path and the board in contact with the snow
  • extends at beginning of turn to initiate turn
  • flexes at end of turn to control speed

TIMING & CO-ORDINATION

  • legs move independently;
  • movements are timed creating equal sized turns;
  • movements are harmonized and fluid.
